Effect of Sodium Bisulfate on Ammonia Levels, Fly Population, and Manure pH in a Horse Barn
نویسندگان
چکیده
Sodium bisulfate applied to horse bedding decreased ammonia levels, manure pH, and the number of flies when compared to a control period without sodium bisulfate. Behavior typical of ponies being bothered by flies (tail swishes, head tosses, and kicks or strikes) was also decreased when sodium bisulfate was used. The effect of sodium bisulfate on Salmonella viability in broiler litter.
Controlling Salmonella populations on commercial broiler grow out farms is a crucial step in reducing Salmonella contamination in processing plants. Broiler litter harbors many species of pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella. Sodium bisulfate has been shown to reduce concentration of bacteria in broiler litter. In experiments 1 and 2, sodium bisulfate was applied to broiler litter at rates ...
متن کاملAlum-Treated Poultry Litter as a Fertilizer Source
Alum used for poultry houses is sold under the commercial name of “Al+ Clear” in either liquid or dry form. Alum should not be confused with other litter treatment chemicals such as “PLT” (poultry litter treatment), as PLT is comprised mainly of sodium bisulfate (NaHSO4). Although PLT is effective at reducing ammonia levels, pathogens in house, energy costs, and potentially increasing forage yi...
متن کاملEvaluation of chemical amendments to reduce ammonia volatilization from poultry litter.
Ammonia volatilization from poultry litter often causes high levels of atmospheric ammonia in poultry houses, which is detrimental to both farm workers and birds. Ammonia emissions from houses also aggravate environmental problems, such as acid rain, and result in a loss of fertilizer nitrogen. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of litter amendments on ammonia volatilizat...
متن کاملAmmonia emission model for whole farm evaluation of dairy production systems.
Ammonia (NH) emissions vary considerably among farms as influenced by climate and management. Because emission measurement is difficult and expensive, process-based models provide an alternative for estimating whole farm emissions. A model that simulates the processes of NH formation, speciation, aqueous-gas partitioning, and mass transfer was developed and incorporated in a whole farm simulati...
متن کاملTemporal changes in the bacterial community of animal feces and their correlation with stable fly oviposition, larval development, and adult fitness
Stable flies are blood-feeding insects with a great negative impact on animals world wide. Larvae develop primarily in animal manure and bacteria are essential for larval development; however, the principle of this dependence is not understood. We hypothesized that as the microbial community of animal manure changes over time, it plays an important role in stable fly fitness. Two-choice bioassa...
